All my life I have been working on something with my hands: drawing, painting and many kinds of crafts. But growing up on a small farm on the outskirts of Munich/Germany also meant, being an artist was not an option.
Although, I became one by training and perseverance. For many years, I worked in watercolor and pencil, also with clay in ceramic sculpture. After I moved to the United States, I picked up sewing again, and sure enough, – discovered the very American art of quilting. Since then, fabric has become my preferred palette. I love this very tactile medium, the texture and the endless possibilities in use of color. In my work, I explore the relationship of colors to each other, how colors enhance or calm down a piece of fiber art, how it directs feelings, emotions, evokes memories. For some time last year, I was experimenting with fabric discharge and dye processes. Especially the occurring randomness fascinated me. Currently, my focus is on mastering free-motion quilting by machine.
Being a trained Cartographer, the habit of extreme precise workmanship helps me to master the technical part, however, coming from a painters point of view, I aspire to transfer my vision into stitches. This could be something I’ve seen roadside, a current event, or a memory from long time ago. I also have the equivalent of an Associates Degree in Fine Arts from FOS Munich/Germany. In 2007 I earned a Certificate in Fiber Arts from the University of Washington Extension program.
Most influential to my artwork are artists as Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Mark Rothko, Jean Tinguely, Gabriele Muenter (Der Blaue Reiter)
Studying works of Hundertwasser or Rothko pushes my sense of color. These two artists seem to be very different, yet both worked extensively with emotions and mood that color produces.
Having family ties to Switzerland, my exposure to Tinguely in Basel made me appreciate the use of every-day items, even trash. My search of new materials to use in my quilts grew instantaneously; nothing gets set aside guileless anymore: It might end up stitched down on my next piece of artwork.
Lisa,
You put together another piece of art with this website. Great job!
Can’t wait to see Nature’s Lace in person. It’s a real winner.
Cathy
Lisa,
Have been thinking about you every day. Glad to hear that you had a good day yesterday and feel up to going to the Flower and Garden Show tomorrow. Will be going there myself this afternoon to sell QA Raffle tickets.
I’m off to Running Stitches and will share with the group about how you’re doing.
Had my Sunday School group pray for you last Sunday. Hope you felt the love.
Carol
Hi Lisa! Hope all is well! I just saw that you are once again published (Your comment in this issue of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine)!
Well said. Are you planning on donating a “Quilt to go” or whatever the new term is for the BPQ show? I’m saving my pennies….
Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday!
Jenny,
yes, I’m planning on donating a small piece of work to OYO – that’s how they call it here (Own You Own)
Well, I have no say on the prices, it’s up to a secret commitee to determine what’s the value. But saving pennies for OYO is a good idea anyway.
Did you know, Quilters Anonymous (QA) has also Quilts to Go? With even more choices, ergo more members.d Note in your calendar: March 18, 19 and 20, 2011 http://www.quiltersanonymous.com/quiltshow.htm
See you soon.
Lisa,
I read your blog about your previously battle with cancer. I was curious about the oncologist recommendation to get “truly skinny.” I have a few friends currently battling cancer and was intrigued about this advice and would appreciate any informtion you could pass along.
Thank you,
Janet
Looking for more of the “At the Market” quilt note cards that I bought at Redmond Saturday Market.
Are you going to any of the area holiday bazaars?
Hello Cathy,
first, I apologize to you for my late response. In recent months, I had lots of trouble with the host of this blog (WordPress), that is the reason why there are no further entries since March 2011.
To answer your questions:
I do have more note cards in all sizes and motives. Unfortunately, I didn’t work at any of the holiday markets, that’s something I’m planning for next year.
I’m not sure where you bought your last cards, I’ve not been at the Redmond Saturday Market with my merchandise. “Think-quilts” was only at the Quilters Anonymous Quilt Show with a full booth. Although, some quilt stores in our area sell my cards (Gathering Fabric/Woodinville, Keepsake Cottage/Bothell Country Village) and the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum.
If you’re still interested, We could meet at some place in Redmond, that’s close to were I live.
I’l also be at the future Quilters Anonymous Quilt Show (March17-19, 2012)
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.
Lisa
Hi Lisa!
I absolutely LOVE your quilt… “Nature’s Lace,” Is there any way I can purchase one? It makes me smile and I would really love to have one and see it everyday. Thank you.
Best,
Shelby
Hello Shelby,
thank you for your request, and -yes-, you can buy this quilt, but unfortunately not directly from me.
I made this quilt for APWQ (Association of Pacific West Quilters @ http://apwq.org/exhibits-lc.html) as a part of their traveling exhibit “Living Colour”, which will ultimately get auctioned off as a fundraiser for the organization. It is based on photographs of the rainforest on the most northern tip of Queensland, taken by my daughter Eva Stoerch, who traveled Australia for 2 years.
If you’re interested buy this quilt, please contact APWQ.
Lisa
Kathy,
I just came across your card request, – again – and I really wonder how you got my note cards in the first place, since I am not (and have never been) a vendor at the Redmond Farmers Market. Actually I have only a few outlets who carry my note cards all year around.
Would you mind to tell me who sold you the cards?
Lisa
Shelby,
the quilt Nature’s Lace will be on Auction soon. Please visit the website of APWQ < http://apwq.org/auction.php >
It is in the second part of the online auction (Group B).
Hope you have a great day,
Lisa
